Banging Gears takes one of car culture's great rivalries and gives it a scoreboard. Drivers, builders and teams go head to head in a competition where speed matters, but so do preparation, tuning, strategy and the people behind the machines.
What separates it from a traditional automotive show is consequence. The cars aren't there to be admired. They have something to prove. Every build decision, mechanical adjustment, launch, pass, win and loss can change the standings, which makes the format run on personality and rivalry as much as horsepower.
Fourteen episodes had to be delivered in three weeks, on a tight budget, at a track, with high-performance cars and a competition nobody could script. Velarde came on as Production Executive after the shoot was already underway and a week behind.
Getting it back meant rebuilding the schedule around what could still be captured, giving the crew a clear line of authority, and holding the safety standard while the pace went up rather than letting it slip when the days got long. Racing production forgives very little, and a compressed schedule is exactly where things go wrong.
All 14 episodes were delivered inside the three-week window, with the format intact.
Banging Gears has not yet been released.
